Harmless hacker prank ideas
The best desk pranks are the ones where nothing actually goes wrong. Every idea below is a GHOSTSCREEN scene — an ordinary web page pretending to be something dramatic. Nothing is installed, crashed or hacked, so the “victim” is never more than five seconds from laughing.
How to run any of these
Open the scene, press Fullscreen (or add ?present=1 to the URL), and step away. Press Esc to bring the toolbar back. That is the whole trick.
The pranks
- The endless update — leave a frozen “installing update, don’t turn off your computer” screen on a friend’s monitor. It never finishes.
- The blue screen — a full-screen crash with a sad face and a fake stop code. Customise the colour and message first.
- The master hacker — open the Hacker Typer, hand someone the keyboard, and let them “hack the mainframe” by mashing keys.
- Enter the matrix — fullscreen digital rain with a hidden message you can reveal on cue.
- Decrypting your files… — a forensic lab slowly “decrypting” classified documents that don’t exist.
- Under attack — a security-operations board flashing red as a fictional breach unfolds and gets contained.
Keep it kind
Pranks are only fun when everyone ends up laughing. Don’t use these screens to genuinely frighten someone, to impersonate a real company, or to pretend you have real access — and remember you couldn’t even if you wanted to, because it is all fiction. Read About for the full disclaimer.
